Gallbladder
A small green sac that concentrates bile up to tenfold and squeezes it out when fat arrives.
- Capacity
- ~50 mL
- Concentration
- Up to 10x liver bile
- Gallstone prevalence
- 10 to 15% of adults
- Most stones
- Silent, never cause symptoms
What it does
Store and concentrate bile between meals, then deliver it on demand to emulsify dietary fat so enzymes can work.
The marvel
It concentrates liver bile by pulling water back out, storing a potent reserve. When fat reaches the duodenum, a hormone called cholecystokinin signals it to contract. It is one of the tidiest stimulus-response loops in the body, and you can live perfectly well without it.
How to serve it well
Avoid crash dieting
Very rapid weight loss substantially increases gallstone formation. Steady loss does not carry the same risk.
Know the classic risk picture
Risk rises with female sex, age, pregnancy, obesity, and family history. Knowing you are in that group makes right-upper-quadrant pain easier to interpret.
Silent stones usually need nothing
Gallstones found incidentally without symptoms generally do not require surgery. Overtreatment is a real risk here.
Book an appointment
- Repeated pain under the right ribs after fatty meals
- Pain that comes in waves and settles after an hour or two
- Nausea reliably associated with that pain
Emergency, go now
- Severe right upper abdominal pain with fever and chills
- Jaundice with abdominal pain
- Pain lasting more than five hours without easing
What you may have been told
“A gallbladder flush passes your stones painlessly overnight.”
Analysis of the expelled "stones" has repeatedly shown them to be saponified soap formed from the olive oil and juice in the protocol. Real stones do not dissolve this way, and a genuinely obstructing stone is a surgical problem.
